Broken Windshield and Glass Repair

Your windshield is the leading safety restraint of your car- adding strength during an accident and preventing occupants from being ejected. If it needs repair, here’s what you need to know about getting it fixed and making sure it continues to protect you and your passengers.

  • Don’t opt for the lowest cost option. If a windshield is not installed correctly, it could pop out in an accident, which would allow the roof to cave in and crush the people inside the vehicle. In the event of an accident, the deployment of the airbag exerts a force on the windshield. If it isn’t glued in properly, the windshield could be blown out.
  • Be sure you utilize a certified automotive shop that is experienced and trained in windshield repairMistakes such as not wearing gloves can result in grease that prevents the adhesive from bonding correctly.
  • Be sure that the installer uses original equipment glass. This type of glass is typically higher quality and better.
  • Be sure they plan to let your car sit after the installation is finished. Good installers know that a car should sit for at least one hour (and up to 12 hours) before being driven.
  • Do your own post-installation inspection. Be sure the molding is straight and there are no signs of adhesives inside the vehicle.

But what about rock chips or stars in the windshield? These types of small chips and cracks (smaller than a dollar bill) can often by repaired by injecting polymer into them and then smoothing the area rather than replacing the entire windshield. To increase the ease of repair, take your car to be fixed soon after the damage has occurred or put a piece of clear tape over the crack until you can make it to the repair shop. The longer the crack remains, the more rain can wash dirt into the crack- making it harder to seal.

While the cost of a windshield repair varies from shop to shop, many times it is covered by car insurance under your comprehensive coverage. In those cases, you may only have to pay the deductible.
